Ta Titi Rest

Ta, Ti-Ti and Rest activities give beginning music students hands-on practice with the quarter note, paired eighth notes, and quarter rest. This collection includes rhythm worksheets, tracing pages, flashcards, matching games, create-a-rhythm activities, standard notation, and stick notation for Pre-K, Kindergarten, and early elementary music. Seasonal themes such as Halloween, Christmas, and Valentine’s Day make the same core rhythm skills easy to revisit throughout the school year.  I like to teach these three rhythms through movement and repetition before moving on to more complicated patterns. Students can say the rhythm syllables, clap the pattern, trace the notes, and then recognize the same rhythm visually. Using several short activities keeps young children involved without turning beginning rhythm reading into a long worksheet lesson.

Frequently Asked Questions

In these beginner activities, Ta represents a quarter note, Ti-Ti represents a pair of eighth notes, and Rest represents a quarter rest.

Many resources in this collection are designed for Pre-K through Grade 2, with Kindergarten being an especially appropriate level for introducing these basic rhythm patterns.

You can use either approach or introduce both. Many of these resources provide the same activities in standard and stick notation, so students can practice without changing the underlying rhythm.

Combine visual rhythm reading with clapping, chanting, tracing, matching, and creating rhythms. This lets children see, say, write, and perform the same rhythmic patterns.
